Harvest & Gather was founded by mika Castañeda & Cat Gunn in 2023.
Harvest & Gather is an experimental, nomadic curatorial project that exists beyond traditional galleries and museums. Through pop-up shows in various outdoor locations, we emphasize creating makeshift space for art anywhere at any moment. Working with a belief that an artspace should reflect the culture, needs, and desires of the city it’s in, we invite artists to showcase their work in temporary, experimental modes while spending time outdoors with friends, loved ones, and the occasional passerby. We seek to elevate artists of intersectional and often vulnerable backgrounds, allowing them to create and show work on their own terms without the inherent institutional violence that comes with showing work in museums/galleries that choose to remain complicit in imperial and colonial ideals. Holding dearly the notion of community as a feeling and not something tangible, Harvest & Gather ultimately hopes to uplift, cherish, and celebrate fellow artists.
Situated in San Diego, Harvest & Gather has worked with artists throughout the Southern California region to consider how we gather and why we need to make these spaces. As queer spaces continue to disappear quicker than new ones can manifest, we recognize how seemingly modest yet sincere gestures are enough to sustain a community in a fleeting moment by offering genuine connections through art and discourse.
